Baseball makes history behind Josh Kandefer '26 at state Catholic championships

6/24/2025 12:37:00 PM

Canisius baseball advanced to the Catholic state championship game for the first time in school history behind an outstanding performance on the mound.

Josh Kandefer '26 was masterful with a two-hit shutout as the Crusaders scored three in the first two innings in a 4-0 victory over Long Island champion Kellenberg in the New York State Catholic High Schools Athletic Association semifinals Friday at Jack Kaiser Stadium at St. John's University in Queens.

Kandefer only walked one and had six strikeouts, many of which were inning-enders.

In the New York State Catholic High Schools Athletic Association championship game on Saturday, Canisius fell to NYC winner Iona Prep, 8-1.

Iona Prep defeated Brooklyn/Queens champion Archbishop Molloy in Friday's second semifinal.

Canisius earned the trip to the Catholic state championships by winning the Georgetown Cup with a deciding Game Three victory over Nichols.
