The run. The record. The reaction. The emotion.
It was a historic day for CHS and Western New York high school football as
Elijah Kimble '27 became WNY's all-time leading rusher Saturday, leading the Crusaders to a huge 43-21 win over Canadian power Huron Heights.
Kimble ran for three touchdowns in the first half and then broke the record on a 6-yard run just before halftime as he surpassed Jehuu Caulcrick of Clymer (6,559 yards; 1999-2002).
He celebrated with his team and his mother when the game was stopped to commemorate the record as the crowd of about 1,000 at the Robert J. Stranksy Memorial Athletic Complex applauded history.
Kimble, a Buffalo native committed to Syracuse University, entered the game with 6,363 career yards and was 197 away from the record.
Kimble finished with 263 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries in the in. His yardage total is now 6,626.
His four TDs put him in second place on the WNY list with 93, where he is again behind Caulcrick (101). Kimble passed Reggie Garner of Cardinal O'Hara, who had 90 from 2004 to 2007.
CHS (3-3) is home again next Saturday at 2 p.m. against Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse (2-3), winners of three straight NYSPHSAA championships. It is a matchup of two of the top 11 teams in the state according to MaxPreps (No. 5 CHS, No. 11 CBA).
