AD Jim Mauro retires after outstanding two-decade run leading CHS Athletics

6/17/2026 10:07:00 AM

Jim Mauro, who has overseen Canisius High School's ascendance to Western New York's premier high school athletic program, has announced that he will retire after nearly two decades at CHS.

"It's been a great run. It's just the right time. It's OK to exhale," Mauro said. "I've truly enjoyed the time and experience here. It was a hard decision – it's hard to leave because of the people – but I'm looking forward to spending more time with my family."

Mauro spent 19 years at CHS during a career of more than four decades in athletics, including Associate Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach at Niagara University. Mauro will stay on at CHS through July.

"Jim Mauro's leadership, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to our students have made a lasting impact on generations of Crusaders and their families," said Principal Tom Coppola '01.

"As I reflect on Jim's tenure, I am struck not only by the many accomplishments of our athletic programs during his leadership, but also by the strong foundation he leaves behind. Through his commitment to our student-athletes, coaches, and the mission of Canisius, Jim has helped position our athletic program for continued success well into the future.

"We are deeply grateful for all that Jim has given to Canisius High School and wish him every blessing in his well-earned retirement."

Mauro's tenure at CHS has been marked by expansion and excellence in all facets of athletics.

He oversaw the design and construction of two of the premier athletic facilities in Western New York: The Bernard J. Kennedy '49 Field House and the Robert J. Stransky Memorial Athletic Complex on Clinton Street.

On the field, Canisius won the Supremacy Cup, annually awarded to the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association's overall athletic champion, for 17 of Mauro's 19 years.

During that time, CHS maintained an annual rate of approximately 12% of senior student-athletes continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

"When I first started, my goal was to make us known throughout the state," Mauro said. "I told coaches that we're going to be the best academic-slash-athletic institution in New York State."

Mauro supervised varsity athletic teams which won 149 regular season and postseason league titles, 11 team state championships plus more than 50 national and state titles in bowling, rowing, squash and swimming.

The football program won nine championships with three different coaches under Mauro – the first of which, in 2009, was the program's first title in 29 years. During his tenure, CHS Football produced several NFL and collegiate players and, with a 28-5 record over St. Joe's, took over the all-time rivalry series in 2023 for the first time since 1986 (CHS currently leads, 52-48-3).

Coach Kyle Husband '96 and CHS Basketball have won 12 Manhattan Cups, all but one during Mauro's tenure, which included three state Catholic titles and an overall state Federation championship in 2015.

Mauro oversaw organization and fundraising for several athletic initiatives – including an expanded  weight room, equipment for the national-level rowing program and a new Athletic Hall of Fame exhibit  – and started the school's successful multi-sport summer camp program.

His described his approach towards his job, his coaches and his teams as: "It's about the institution: It's about the people who came before you, the people who are coming after you. It's about representing Canisius High School to the best of our abilities."

As he always does, he credited his coaches for so much of the school's success – and not simply on the scoreboard.

"I've been really fortunate … Tom Flaherty (rowing) has been here since I've been here. Kyle, Joe Zera (JV basketball), Steve Joyce (tennis and squash), Sam Belsito (soccer and then hockey), Bryce Hopkins (teacher, former assistant football coach and longtime athletic department contributor) … just great, great people, terrific coaches who care about the whole – not just the season.

"When I say 'the whole,' I mean really making an impact on kids in a positive way. I was super, super fortunate to come across coaches that were willing to do that consistently … like the school does. It's a great place, it really is."

Among Mauro's personal highlights of a career full of them:

* The 2019 state Catholic football championship win over Cardinal Hayes of New York City, 25-24, in the final seconds. "This one will always stand out: Tyler Baker's touchdown pass to Nik McMillan, and the subsequent C.J. Ozolins conversion score to win it – that one will never leave me."

* This year's MMAA hockey championship team bringing the Niagara Cup trophy to the Manhattan Cup basketball championship game on a day that saw CHS win two championships over St. Joe's: "The kids running in with the hockey trophy this year to the basketball game. I thought very highly of that group and those guys – they were just great kids and that was a great atmosphere that night."

* The 2015 overall Federation state championship in basketball – "That was really cool because it had an NCAA Tournament flavor to it" – and also the 2020 Manhattan Cup basketball champions, which had its very promising postseason run derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

* His son, Vincent Mauro '21, being part of the 2021 Georgetown Cup champion baseball team. "My son's time here was during Covid, so it didn't play out as much as you'd like, and he had mono his senior year and missed his first seven games … but he came back, he had a really good year and they went on a great run to win the Georgetown Cup – o that obviously was one of my personal highlights."

During his college days at St. Bonaventure, Mauro – a Niagara Falls native – found himself friends with several CHS graduates, who spoke so highly of their experience at Canisius.

"My college buddies would sit around – four or five of my best friends were Canisius grads – and it was impactful as to how much they revered and loved their time here.

"Canisius has been great for me, and it's been great for my family, allowing my son to grow up here and attend school and experience everything. It was absolutely huge. Until you're here, I think it's an experience that you can't really grasp."
