It is always a battle in South Buffalo.
Â
Canisius trailed the entire first half and late into the third quarter in their first road game against Bishop Timon-St. Jude in eight years, but the Crusaders surged when it mattered most to claim a 35-14 victory.
Â
The victory before a standing-room-only crowd at Pierce Field at Mulroy Park gives Canisius a 3-0 record in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association and cements the top seeding and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.
Â
The Crusaders were held back by turnovers throughout the night, as Timon jumped to a 14-0 first quarter lead and held a 14-7 advantage until CHS tied it with 4 minutes left in the third quarter. From there Canisius owned the rest of the game by a 21-0 score.
Â
It was a similar finish for the Crusaders as they had at St. Joe's in their first league game of the year, when CHS trailed entering the fourth quarter but then was in control to the end of a 24-17 victory, their 10th straight in the rivalry series.
Â
Canisius is set to host a MMAA semifinal on Sat. Nov. 16. The championship is scheduled for Sat. Nov. 23. The Catholic state championship game, which will be hosted by the Buffalo team this year against a downstate representative, will be Sat. Nov. 30. Â
Â
The Crusaders host Erie High of Pennsylvania next Sat. Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the CHS Homecoming game; travel to Canadian national power Huron Heights of Ontario on Sat. Oct. 26; and hold Senior Day on Sat. Nov. 2 against strong New Hampshire program Nashua North.
Canisius is now 17-2 against Timon since 2007.
Â
The Crusaders lost its previous trip to Timon, 7-0, in 2016, before avenging the loss in the playoffs (42-14); CHS won its last two meetings by large margins (78-0 in 2017 and 47-0 in 2019).
Â
CHS (4-2, 2-0 MMAA) is No. 1 in The Buffalo News large school poll and entered the weekend No. 5 in MaxPreps' New York State rankings.
