Henry Smith '26: All-American.
Smith, a senior captain from Buffalo who helped lead CHS Soccer to its second straight Monsignor Martin Athletic Association title and a berth in the state championship game, was one of 110 boys nationwide named to the United Soccer Coaches High School All-American Team.
Smith was one of just 12 selections from New York State, one of just five from upstate and the only one from Western New York.
Smith led the MMAA in points (61) and assists (17) and led CHS in goals with 22 as the Crusaders went 16-2-1, including a 16-game winning streak that took them to the state final.
"It's such an honor to be named All-American," said Smith. "This award doesn't just show my performance this year but that of the entire Canisius soccer team – the work we all put in since the summer is being recognized.
"I want to thank everyone on the team for pushing me and believing in me throughout the entire season.
"The program here at Canisius is different. You buy into it even before the season starts and play for one another. I'm forever grateful for being a part of that.
"I want to thank my parents for always pushing and believing in me and I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them. Both coach Roberts and coach Wzontek gave me the opportunity to captain and play in this program.
"Finally, thank you to my teammates throughout my four years here – especially
Noah Cosgrove, for believing in me and always pushing me through the ups and downs."
Smith netted the decisive penalty kick in a 2-1 victory over St. Joe's in the MMAA championship and had the lone goal in the New York State Catholic High Schools Athletic Association semifinal victory over Archbishop Molloy of Queens at St. John's University.Â
This is the second straight year that CHS Soccer has had a player earn All-American status; Zach Bonuito '25 of Lancaster was named last season.
The All-American honorees will be recognized at the United Soccer Coaches All-America Ceremony on Jan. 17, 2026 in Philadelphia as part of the United Soccer Coaches Convention.
