The Crusaders' wrestling team took down St. Joe's to score a monumental Monsignor Martin Association victory Wednesday night.
St. Joe's had won 14 straight dual meets against Canisius. It is believed to be Canisius' first win over the Marauders in more than 20 years.
"It's fantastic," said Canisius coach
John Baldwin. "These kids have been working their butts off. ... I think we're only going up from here. A great day."
The 36-27 win for Canisius came via victories by fall from Aiden Mecca '24 (189), Luke Brydges '22 (138) and Cody Franklin '22 (160). Braydon Vandenberg '22 (215), Henry Mertz '22 (285) and Constantine Santacrose '25 (118) received victories by forfeit.
With the teams playing a chess match of available wrestlers, St. Joe's won four bouts by forfeit and there were two double forfeits. Baldwin credited Reese Spiro '25 for a battling tough in a loss to veteran Anthony DePinto at 172; the 9-2 loss helped Canisius in the team points battle.
