CHS Tennis had a a great day at the All-Catholic Championships, including winning the doubles championship for the second straight year.
Tommy Sheehan '25 of Buffalo and
Austin Carney '25 of Amherst won the doubles championship while Canisius also took second in singles and third in doubles Sunday morning at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park.
Sheehan and Carney, who were seeded second, knocked off the No. 1 seeded team from Nichols in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, in the final. The CHS pair won all four of their matches by straight sets and only dropped a total of eight games in the entire tournament. Last year the doubles championship was won by
Henry Richards '24 and
Connor Jackson '26.
Canisius and Nichols dominated the championships as they were the only two schools among the top three in both singles and doubles; each had three place-finishers.
Erik Kraus '25 of Clarence Center took second place in the singles tournament. Kraus, the No. 2 seed, scored a great come-from-behind semifinal victory, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, to reach the final where he fell to the No. 1 seed from Nichols.
Ryan Egnatchik '28 of Lake View and
Jack Richards '28 of Buffalo finished third in doubles after nearly knocking off the top seeds in the semifinals. The CHS pair fell to No. 1 Nichols, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals before cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 third-place match victory over St. Joe's.
Brothers
Gary Hall '26 and
Rocco Hall '28 of Lewiston pushed top-seeded Nichols doubles team to three sets in a super-close match with a tight finish that ended with Nichols prevailing, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (5).
Connor Jackson '26 of Williamsville won his first round singles match before falling in the quarterfinals to the No. 4 seed from Nichols.
Canisius and longtime excellent coach Steve Joyce finished second in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association regular season team standings. The Crusaders won their first seven matches before a pair of close, tough 3-2 losses to Nichols late last week to close out the season.
