Soccer set to open season in Syracuse at West Genesee Tournament

9/4/2025 10:26:00 AM

The Varsity Soccer Crusaders will officially open their 2025 campaign Friday in the Syracuse area at West Genesee's annual season-opening Wildcat Tournament.

Kickoff for the match between the Crusaders and Wildcats is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mike Messere Stadium in Camillus.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Friday's contest at West Genesee marks the fourth consecutive year that Canisius has opened its season on the road. The Crusaders last began a campaign in Buffalo in 2021.
  • The 2025 season serves as the fourth under head coach Orville Roberts, who guided Canisius to the 2024 Monsignor Martin Championship, securing the title with a 3-1 victory over St. Joe's.
  • Canisius will be led by three senior captains: Henry Smith (5 goals, 3 assists in 2024), Noah Cosgrove (8 goals, 3 assists), and Austin Xiao (2 goals). The trio will provide leadership and experience across the forward line, midfield, and defense.
  • The Crusaders also welcome back returning starter senior Victory Shalamba, who anchors the back line at centerback. Shalamba played significant minutes last season, bringing strength in the air and composure in one-on-one defending to a defense that proved key during the 2024 title run.
  • Friday's match is the first-ever meeting between Canisius and West Genesee, offering the Crusaders an early test against a Section III opponent known for its defensive discipline and physical play.
  • The Crusaders' non-league schedule also features contests with Rochester powers Aquinas and McQuaid Jesuit, Pennsylvania powerhouse Cathedral Prep, and local champions Lancaster and East Aurora.

UP NEXT
  • The winner of Friday's match will advance to the championship game of the Wildcat Tournament in the afternoon on Saturday, Sept. 6, while the losing side will play in the consolation game.
  • Following the Wildcat Tournament, Canisius opens Monsignor Martin Athletic Association play Monday, Sept. 8, with a road contest at St. Francis.
  • The Crusaders then return home to host St. Mary's on Wednesday, Sept. 10, in their 2025 home opener.
