John Barnes, Jr. literally gre up with Canisius High School football as he attended practice with his father, the legendary Johnny Barnes. Johnny Jr., put together a career any coach or father would be proud of. Johnny never lost a game in the blue and gold, including three years on varsity. He co-captained the 1976 team to a Monsignor Martin Championship with Steve Connolly. He was the center on an offensive line that allowed no sacks the entire season. John's accolades as a scholastic player are numerous. He was 1st Team All-Catholic as a junior and senior. As a senior he was voted 1st Team All-WNY by both the Courier Express and the Buffalo Evening News. That year he was also voted 3rd Team All-State and was an honorable mention Catholic All-American. The Buffalo News named him to the All Time All-WNY Team, an honor he shared with fellow Crusader Phil McConkey '75. Following Canisius, John had a successful collegiate, semi-professional and coaching career. AS the head coach of Turner Carroll he led the Chargers to five league championships in seven years. He also has his alma mater as an assistant coach. In 1986 he received the Human Relations Award form the NAACP and in 1999 received mayoral commendation for his work beautifying the City of Buffalo. John's love for the finer aspects of the game of football is evident by his 30 years of service to the Buffalo bills as a statistician.
