Jack Dunnigan was one of the most decorated runners in Canisius history. As a sophomore, Jack was a member of the first-ever Crusader track team under Fr. Harry Boyle, S.J. In the spring of the inaugural season, Jack won the "Novice Mile" at the National Jesuit Championships held in New York City. As a junior, he captured the gold medal in the 880 (half-mile) at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships held in Toronto, setting a ne Canadian record. He won gold in the 880 at the U.S. National Junior Olympics meet, setting a course record. As a senior, he won gold for Canisius in the 880 at Madison Square Garden in the National Interscholastic Track and Field Indoor Championships. In three years of racing for Canisius he was undefeated.
After graduation he attended the University of Notre Dame. As captain of the Irish freshman track team he continued his undefeated streak. After his first season at Notre Dame he left the school to enter the seminary. An active member of the Class of 1953, Jack attended his 55th reunion in the summer of 2008. He passed away in March of 2009 and is survived by his wife, Katrina.Â
