Phil Gangi pitched his team to many key victories during his three years as a varsity starter. In 1988 Phil was the only 10th grader to start a game in the Georgetown Cup Championship. As a junior, Phil garnered the WKBW Super Seven Athlete of the Week for pitching Connie McGillicuddy's 300th coaching victory. Also as a junior playing both centerfield ans pitcher, Phil earned 1st All-catholic Honors and Honorable mention All WNY Honors. As a senior, with the record of 6-1 on the mound, Phil was 1st All-Catholic, the All-Catholic co-player of the year, was 2nd All-WNY and represented Canisius at the North South All Star game. An accomplished running back on the football team, Phil earned 2nd Team All-Catholic as a junior before an injury-shortened senior campaign. At graduation Phil received the Athlete of the Year award for the Class of 1990 and was a Mr. Canisius finalist.
