Joe Rine was a two-sport athlete and standout baseball player during his time at Canisius. As a three-year member of the varsity baseball team, the first baseman was named to the All-Catholic first team and the All-Western New York first team in his senior season. Rine - a co-captain - was second on the team with a .435 batting average and starred in the Western New York All-Star game at the then-named Pilot Field. He finished his high school career as the starting first baseman for the Western Region at the Empire State Games.
