Robert Austin was an exceptional athlete earning spots on the varsity football and basketball teams his sophomore year. In football he earned All-Prep as a lineman, aiding his teammates to an undefeated 1936 season. His persistence and  tenacity on defense was praised by his peers. In basketball Bob was a starter for one of the most dominating runs in Canisius hoops history. Playing both guard and forward Bob was a key contributor to the undefeated campaigns of 1936-37 and 1937-38. The 34 game in streak started with a victory over Hamburg on December 22, 1936 and culminated with a convincing victory over De Veaux. Over the 34 game stretch they outscored their opponents 1186 to 764. The winning streak ended at the National Catholic High School Tourney in Chicago. The team bowed out with a 2-2 record. Bob also holds the honor of winning Canisius High School Table Tennis championship moderated by Johnny Barnes. He also won the President's Cup Amateur Match Play Championship at Sheridan Park as a senior.
He worked at the Ford Stamping Plant as a skilled trades repairman unit his retirement. Bob served as an Army officer in World War II. He and his wife Milly were married in 1941 raised five sons and were bessed with nine grandchildren.
